Tutorial: Pompones / Pompoms

En las mercerías especializadas podemos encontrar todo tipo de instrumentos para hacer labores y manualidades. En ocasiones tengo que preguntar para que sirven algunas cosas porque no las había visto nunca. A veces lo que descubro me encanta y otras me doy cuenta de que la ignorancia me ha hecho gastar dinero sin necesidad porque hay artilugios totalmente innecesarios. Eso pienso de los que sirven para hacer pompones.

 

In the specialized haberdasheries we can find all kinds of tools for needlework and crafting. In some occasions I have to ask what are they good for, because I had never seen them before.  Sometimes I love what I discover but others I think ignorance had made me spend money on totally useless devices. That is what I think about tools for making pompoms.

Hace muchos años mi hermano aprendió a hacer pompones en el colegio y me enseñó. Luego olvidé cómo se hacían y cuando lo he intentado me he hecho un lío, por lo que sé que es casi imposible hacer un simple pompón si no conoces bien los pasos, que en realidad son muy fáciles.

 

Many years ago my brother learned to make pompoms at school and he taught me. Later I forgot how to make them and when I have tried it’s been a real mess. It is almost impossible to make a simple pompom if you don’t know the steps, which actually are very easy. 

 

En un trozo de cartulina no muy fina (de una caja de galletas, por ejemplo) se dibujan dos círculos de un tamaño algo superior al del pompón que se desea hacer.

 

First, draw two circles on a piece of cardboard not too thin (for example form a cookies box) They must be a little bigger than the wanted pompon.

A continuación se recortan los círculos y se dibujan otros más pequeños en el centro de éstos para poder pasar la lana por ellos. También hay que recortarlos.

 

Then cut the circles out and draw others smaller in the center for putting the wool through them. Cut them out too.

Una vez tenemos los “donuts” de cartulina listos, los ponemos juntos y comenzamos a envolverlos con la lana elegida, pasándola por el agujero. Como una madeja entera no cabe, se van cortando trozos de unos dos metros (más largos se pueden enredar). Cuanto más gruesa sea la lana y más añadamos, más tupido y bonito se quedará el pompón.

 

Once we have the “cardboard doughnuts” ready, join them and start wrapping them with the chosen wool, putting it through the hole. As the entire hank does not fit, cut pieces of approximately two meters – six feet (longer can get entangled). The thicker and the more wool you put, the thicker and nice the pompom will be.

El siguiente paso es el más delicado, aunque no es difícil. Hay que recortar la lana por el borde del círculo que hemos hecho. Tratad de abrir un hueco con los dedos entre las dos cartulinas para meter bien la tijera y cortad despacio y recto, para que no queden unas hebras más largas que otras. Con la otra mano, sujetad la lana por el centro para que no se escape una vez cortada.

 

The following step is the most tricky, though it is not difficult. Cut the wool through the edge of the circle that you have done. Try to open a space with your fingers between both cardboards to put the scissors through and cut slow and straight, to avoid some strands longer than others. With the other hand, hold the wool from the center not to let it away once cut.

Sin soltar del centro, se pasa un trozo de lana entre las dos cartulinas, se aprieta fuerte para sujetar todas las hebras y se hace un nudo.

 

Without letting the center of the circle go, put a piece of wool through both cardboards, and tie a knot to hold all the strands together.

Listo.

 

It’s ready.

Se pueden emplear lanas de distintos colores o tela en lugar de lana. Con los pompones podéis hacer mil cosas: guirnaldas, muñecos, disfraces, ramos,… Y es una manualidad ideal para realizar con niños, sencilla y con vistosos resultados.

 

Can be used wools of different colors or fabric instead of wool. With the pompoms you can make many things: garlands, dolls, disguises, bunches… And it is an ideal craft to make with children, simple and with showy results.
