My sister has three children, many nowadays, so she is an expert mom. She was the one who talked about dou dous, small dolls or blankets for the babies and the small children to sleep with that give them safety and tranquility. Sometimes, with the same purpose, parents also give them to the children for taking it to the day-care center.
Actually, they have been always in use. Sure you remember the doll you used to go to bed with. I rescued mine one year ago from a box that my mother stored away. In Spain it is known as “mantita”, “trapito” or sleeping doll. In other countries it is called dou dou or security blanket.
But the concept has been renovated a bit. On the one hand, because some moms sleep with it or keep it close to them when is possible for transmiting their smell to the dou dou, which adds another reason for child’s safety, besides familiarity.
On the other hand, because their shape has been adapted looking for the babies comfort. Now they use to be little blankets lightly quilted from where part of the doll (head, arms or legs…) stands out.
As they seem to me one of the best and more useful ideas for children and babies I have heard lately, I have decided to design some dou dous. If you like them, they are available at my shop on Etsy, though I will be creating new models. I can personalize them with the child’s name and every material I use is cotton to avoid allergies.
