Guía craft de Nueva York / New York City craft guide

New York is one of my favorite cities. I’ve been there twice and it has no end, there are thousand of things to see and always some of them left when you leave. But it doesn’t matter, it’s  another reason to return. Here you have some interesting places to visit in New York for crafts.

Purl Soho (459 Broome Street) is an exquisite shop at the Soho that sells fabrics, felts, wools, threads, books… everything is lovely though pretty expensive. I recommend you its web page, I have been following  it for a long time and it proposes ideas with very much style.

TheCity Quilter (133 West 25th Street) is a great quilting shop with hundreds of fabrics, threads, books and quilting tools, besides a exhibition hall. Wonderful! In USA you can find everything you could imagine for quilting and at much cheaper prices than in Spain.

Annie & Company (1325 Madison Avenue) is at the east of Central Park. It has a section dedicated to cross-stitch and other to knitting. It’s prohibitively expensive, but it is worth visiting it to see its wonderful threads, wools and patterns. Its variety and quality of threads is difficult to find.

Michael’s is a chain of craft stores. The one in New York (808 Columbus Avenue) is as big as a department store and you can find all different stuff: stationery, foam, cooking, beads, wools, felt… my daughter and I would have stayed there for ages! You will not find so many things there as in specialized shops for quilting and sewing, but I advise you to visit it first because their prices are great, everything is incredibly cheap compared to Spain, and very good quality.

M&J Trimming (1008 6th Avenue, between 37th and 38th St.) sells ribbons, braids and beads since 1936. Its very high racks cover every wall full of wonderful treasures. It is not possible to find anywhere else such variety.

Almost next door is Fun 2 Bead (1028 6th Avenue), a great beads shop. It has so many things that you will not be able to know where to start from.

There is a plentiful supply of shops in New York dedicated to knit, but Lion Brand is the house of wools par excellence. The shop (34 West 15th Street) is small, but cozy. I was very surprised when I visited it because they had a Mochimochi’s work on display, one of my favorite artists.

Beadsof Paradise (16 East 17th Street) is a small very alternative shop where you can find  different beads, specially ethnic ones and semi precious stones.

Finally, two advices: visit the American Folk Art Museum (2 Lincoln Square, Columbus Avenue with 66th Street), specially this year, which it is dedicated to the quilt. The exhibition collects amazing works from the 19th century to the present.

And stop by Barnes & Noble, a bookstores chain that has a marvellous craft books section.
