Ribbon embroidery is on the rise, there are increasingly more blogs, websites and books dedicated to this needlework. Textures that can be obtained and its three-dimensional look make it very attractive for the embroidery fans. In addition, the stitches are the same as those for thread embroidery. I’m learning and I like it more and more.

The required materials for ribbon embroidery are:
1.- Ribbons: it’s possible to use all kinds of ribbons, though every kind has its properties. The preferred are those made of silk, for being the easiest to handle and because with them can be made the finest and most delicate embroideries. But also can be used cotton, satin, synthetic … ribbons. Those made of polyester, for example, are ideal to create forms.
2.- Fabrics: they have to be chosen according to the effect that wants to be reached. In any case, it must be a fabric that supports the work well, but with an open weft that allows to go through with the ribbon. The usual is cotton or linen.
3.- Needles: though it depends on the used ribbon and fabric, in general the needles should have a hole large enough to the ribbon to pass through. The chosen tip must be thin (chenille needles) or rounded (tapestry needles) according to the technique used.

4.- Other tools: frame, punch and ribbon bodkins. And the usual for embroidery (tracing paper, scissors, etc.).
