Some time ago a friend asked me about tutorials which basically explain how to make a simple patchwork quilt and I didn’t find any I was sure about. So I’m going to take advantage of the fact that actually I’m making one for an order and I will try to explain it.

The first is to decide the size of the quilt (this one is for a cradle) and the design. I don’t like if it looks excessively ornate, so I choose either simple shapes with many fabrics or complex blocks with less fabrics. I always combine printed fabrics with plain ones and if I add embroideries or appliques, I avoid doing it on printed ones. Each one has his personal tastes, but it’s important to define them before starting to design.

For this quilt I wanted to use printed children’s fabrics, so the structure had to be very simple: squares. I’m going to edge the quilt with bias binding, so for the whole size (63’’ x 31.5’’) the squares are going to be 6.5’’ x 6.5’’. I use to draw a simple diagram in Excel to fit the measures and decide where I place the embroideries or appliques (the suns in the drawing).

I have chosen rose and blue shades (very rare in me, really). To choose the fabrics is fun, though by the end I’m upset because it’s really hard for me to decide.

I wanted to personalise the quilt with an embroidery. Since I somewhere saw pillows in the shape of clouds, I had in mind I had to draw a motif with a cloud. There is always something that inspires you, this is the idea of this blog! Once I have the design and the fabrics, I start cutting the pieces and embroidering the motif.

Then I decide how to combine everything. This is the part I like the most!

The next is to sew the pieces. In this quilt I have made lines I have joined later. In the lines of the embroidered motif I have joined the squares before sewing them to the embroidery.

I have to admit I don’t like quilting and, though there is no possible comparison, I detest doing it by hand. I use to quilt by the seams, it’s easier and faster. I have cut a piece of wadding and a fabric for the back, both to size of the quilt. And I have assembled them on my bed trying not to leave any wrinkle. When it’s small it’s not difficult. And it’s better if you use a good quality wadding.

After quilting, it only remains to close the quilt, in this case with a bias binding.

¿Os gusta como ha quedado?

Do you like the result?

  3. Gracias, Esperanza.
