Escuela de Patchwork: materiales y herramientas II / Patchwork School: materials and tools II

Let’s continue seeing the materials and tools used in patchwork.

  • Rulers: rulers for patchwork are indispensable. They are transparent and show all the measures it size covers, in centimetres or inches, apart from different angles. For me, the squared and the rectangular are basic, but from there you can acquire triangular, semicircular, curved, etc.
  • Templates: you can acquire a wide range of templates, but you  also can make them ourselves, of cardboard or plastic. In our experience and preference, we will use them with or without seam allowance, which uses to be 5 millimetres.
  •
  • Self-healing matthough it’s used fundamentally as base for cutting, it’s also a measurement tool. On one face it’s graduated in centimetres and on the other one in inches.
  • Double side fusible interlining: it uses to realize applications, so that we stick it to the application and this one to the base on which we want to sew it.
  • Freezer paper: it is a question of a paper waxed by one of his faces for the one that sticks fast temporarily to the fabric with the heat of the iron. It is used for applications to hidden point and, especially, in the technique of paper piecing. It gives him an outfit to the fabric that makes her more manageable on having supported the form of the piece
  • Tracing paper:  it’s used to make templates and patterns.
  • Gluesthere are several types and each one has a usefulness. The spray glue is temporary and the liquid glues or of bar they are permanent. I like that of bar because it is easy to use and there is no danger of steeping the fabric and of leaving a rodal, though it is less strong than the liquid..
  • Hilos:
  • Threads
    • To sew pieces we use adapted to the fabric, generally of cotton 100 %.
    • For applications to hidden point in addition we will treat that the color is as seemed as possible to the fabric of the piece that we are sewing.
    • For applications with blanket stitch  and for crazy quilt use embroidery thread and can play with the colors: or we use an equal color to that of the fabric or look for an effect of contrast.
    • To quilt to hand waxed threads exist in order that it turns out easier to penetrate the caps of the quilt, though also we can buy wax and wax it we themselves.
    • To quilt to machine the thread has to be resistant. It is habitual to use transparent thread.

  • Hoops and frames: they use to quilt to hand. They are big and there are basically two types: wooden circulate and of plastic squared. In any case they are different from those of embroidery, since his end is to hold several caps preventing them from moving.

About the fabrics and the wadding we will speak in other posts, since there are enough aspects that to treat.
