DIY, "hazlo tú mismo" I / Do it yourself I

Hace unos meses me pidieron que participase en un estudio sobre el DIY que se está realizando en la Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona. Con su permiso, quiero compartir con vosotros mis respuestas a su cuestionario. Aquí va una primera parte (la segunda parte aquí).

A few months ago I was asked to take part in a study about the DIY which is being made at the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona. With their permission, I want to share with you my answers to the questionnaire. Here is the first part (second post here). 

¿Dónde nace el DIY?

El DIY ha existido siempre. Podemos plantearnos más bien cuándo se ha perdido en países como España, debido el ritmo de vida que llevamos. Pero la crisis económica lo ha recuperado por necesidad y porque las personas desempleadas tienen tiempo. Pero en los países anglosajones, por ejemplo, se ha mantenido a lo largo del tiempo, especialmente en EE.UU.

Where was DIY born?

The DIY has always existed. We can rather consider when it was lost in countries as Spain, due to our current pace of life. But the economic crisis has recovered it out of necessity and because the unemployed people have spare time. But in the Anglo-Saxon countries, for example, it has been maintained over time, specially in USA.

¿A qué sector de la población está dirigido?

Especialmente a las mujeres, ahora mismo sin distinción de edad.  Y poco a poco los hombres se incorporan a ello, pero de momento muy pocos. Es otra diferencia que tenemos en España respecto a los países anglosajones donde, al menos en mi ámbito -las labores-, los hombres “cogen las agujas”, sobre todo para tejer.

What population is it directed at?

Specially at women, nowadays regardless of age. And men are increasingly joining, but at the moment very few. This is another difference that we have in Spain from the Anglo-Saxon countries where, at least in my area -neddlecrafts-, men " take the needles ", especially for knitting. 

¿Cómo conociste el DIY? ¿Qué te impulso a empezar? 

Llevo haciendo bordado, costura y patchwork veinticinco años, dedicada profesionalmente a ello ocho. Decidí abrir el blog hace cinco años para transmitir mi pasión por los crafts. Empecé mostrando el trabajo de los artistas y artesanos que me gustan y contando mis fuentes de inspiración y aprendizaje. Cada vez más, los lectores me fueron pidiendo que les explicase cómo hacer cosas y así empecé.

How did you know the DIY? What drove you to begin?

I have made embroidery, sewing and patchwork for twenty-five years, engaged professionally in it for eight. I decided to start the blog five years ago to transmit my passion for crafts. I began by showing the work of the artists and craftsmen I like and telling about my sources of inspiration and learning. Then the readers more and more asked me to explain them how to make things and so I began.

¿Has participado en algún taller para aprender nuevas técnicas?

Casi todo lo he aprendido sola. Hice dos talleres hace tiempo y lo pasé muy bien. Pero ahora que tengo mi propia escuela, The Crafty Room, disfruto mucho en los talleres de los otros profesores. Es relajante, creativo y me ahorra mucho tiempo de "autoaprendizaje". Además, compartir tu afición con otras personas es muy divertido.

Have you participated in any workshop to learn new techniques?

I have learned everything on my own  but I’ve participated in two and I have a great time. But now that I have my own school, The Crafty Room, I enjoy very much at other teachers’ workshops. It is relaxing, creative and it saves me a lot of time of self-learning. Besides, it is real fun to share your interests with other people.

¿Qué tiendas frecuentas? ¿Es caro realizar este tipo de actividades?

Es importante moverse e investigar un poco para encontrar buenos materiales a precios razonables, aunque no hay que agobiarse. Un sitio te lleva a otro, los amigos te aconsejan, descubres tiendas leyendo blogs,… Al principio ya tienes bastante con enterarte de lo que haces y lo que necesitas. Aconsejo el pequeño comercio porque te atienden bien, te explican y aconsejan.

Es caro según como lo veas. Si lo haces por tener el producto final es caro, pero si te planteas que inviertes en tiempo de creatividad, entretenimiento y enriquecimiento personal, no.

What shops do you frequent? Is it expensive to carry out this type of activities?
It is important to hunt for good materials at reasonable prices, though it is not necessary to get overloaded. A place takes you to another, friends advise you, you discover shops reading blogs, … At the beginning, it is enough to find out what you make and what you need. I recommend  small retail shops because you are well assisted, they explain and give advise.

It could be expensive depending on the way you see it. If you just do it for buying the final product, it is expensive, but if you think that you spend on time of creativity, entertainment and personal enrichment, then it is not.
