The wadding is the fabric that is placed between the top and the back of the quilt. In the past any fabric was used, but nowadays special fabrics are manufactured.

It is very important to choose the appropiate wadding, taking into account its thickness, elasticity, weave, draping… It’s a good idea to buy small pieces of several types and try them, hand and machine quilting, and see the result and the difficulty of its handling. The choice will also depend on the fabrics we used to make the quilt.

Tipos de guata:
Types of wadding:

Polyester: in principle, this is the lowest quality material and the most difficult to handle, but we should distinguish:

  • 50 grams Polyester: it is quite thin, adapted to quilt and to use as stuffing.
  • 115 grams Polyester: cheap, though its draping is not very good.
  • 170 grams Polyester: too thick, very difficult to handle.
  • Woven wadding: it does not deform, so it is perfect for tapestries or wall hangings.
  • Polydown wadding: made of polyester, but it has a resin that makes it softer and easy to sew.
  • Thermore: it is actually a brand. It is made of polyester but with a very good draping.

Wool: it is the best quality wadding and the most expensive. It is very easily quilted and its drapeading is the best. It is very thin and warm, though it does not allow to obtain volume in the quilting. It requires hand wash or dry clean.

Cotton: a good option to prevent allergies, the best for needlecrafts for children.

  • Mix of 80 % cotton and 20 % polyester. It is a medium quality and good value wadding. The polyester gives elasticity and the cotton shrinks a bit, so bear
it in mind and do not use in designs which need to be often washed.
  • Organic cotton: ecological and hypoallergenic, very appropriate for quilting by hand but difficult machine quilting.
  • 100 % Cotton: the easiest wadding to sew and quilt, by hand and machine, and very resistant.

My advice, after making quite enough quilts, is that you would should not buy a bad quality wadding; avoid of the thick and rough waddings, you will go mad while you quilt and it will be quite deformed, with no definite lines. After all the work invested, the top will ruin.

If you make quilts to give as a gift or for orders, as it is my case, the safest is to use cotton to prevent from allergies, specially if it is for babies. I use almost always the wadding 80% cotton-20% polyester, because its price is very reasonable and works very well. But the best idea is that you experiment yourselves.
