Before dealing with the patchwork techniques in detail, it is important to obtain an overall view of how to make a quilt, that is to say, a piece of patchwork. This will allow you to place yourself in the stage of the process which we will refer to in future posts.

The first is to decide the size of the quilt and the design, both the form and the colors. For example, I don’t like if it looks excessively ornate, so I choose either simple shapes with many fabrics or complex blocks with less fabrics. I always combine printed fabrics with plain ones and if I add embroideries or appliques, I avoid doing it on printed ones. Each one has his personal tastes, but it’s important to define them before starting to design.

The second step is to make a sketch.  I use to draw a simple diagram in Excel to fit the measures and decide where I place the embroideries or appliques (the suns in the drawing).

Next, make the top. To choose the fabrics is fun, though by the end  I am upset because it i’s really hard for me to decide. Once we have the design and the fabrics, we start cutting, combining and sewing the pieces.

Then we have to quilt. I have to admit I do not like quilting and, though there is no possible comparison, I detest doing it by hand. I use to quilt by the seams, it’s easier and faster, although I try to improve because there are a thousand posibilities with wonderful results.

After quilting, it only remains to close the quilt. It can be made in many ways. As you can see in the photo, in this case I used a bias binding.
