Escuela de Patchwork: diseñar el top del quilt I / Patchwork School: planning the quilt top I

Sometimes you know exactly how you want your finished quilt to look but other times you don´t. Understanding the elements of a quilt top and how they work together will enable you to plan your quilt.

Determining
quilt size:
The first step is to determinate the desired finished size. For a wall hanging, base the width and length on the space you have available. To make a throw, when measuring, have the blankets, sheets and pillow on the bed. Measure the width, the length, the drop length and the pillow. And the same way with a runner table, a tablecloth, a bag,…

Adjusting quilt size: If you know what size quilt you’d like to make but the chosen pattern is smaller or larger than you want, there are serveral changes you can make. You have two options:
  • You may be changing the proportions of the elements in realtionship to one another.
  • Add or remove blocks, complete blocks or parts thereof. Or add, remove, enlarge or reduce other elements of the top.

Draw a diagram on graph paper to see how the changes will affect the finished size and the appearance of your quilt.

Elements of a quilt top: All the elements of a quilt make a statement in the quilt, so it’s
important to know them well.
  • Blocks: are the main element in the quilt. They most commonly are square, but can also be other shapes (rectangular, triangular, hexagonal,…). You can use one block or several block styles.
  • Setting squares or triangles: are the secondary blocks, often made with solid fabrics, placed between the main blocks. They give the eye a place to rest, setting off the main blocks.
  • Sashing: are the strips and/or the squares of fabric between blocks that give the blocks definition. Not all quilt tops have sashing.
  • Borders: frame the quilt center, visually holding in the design and give a stopping point. Some tops don’t have borders.
  • Binding: can blend or contrast with ther border or blocks, depending on the design we want to make.
