I have been delaying for long the moment to block my latest knitted garments. Till now I haven’t needed it and I was afraid of damaging them and throw away so many working hours and the results with which I was very satisfied. But it is already done and it has gone right!

Last two years I have knitted very much to learn new things and to improve my technique. The truth is that I love it. I don´t know how I am going to find time for another needlecraft! Lace, Jacquard, Intarsia, fantasy stitch knitting… I love everything … Sure you understand me.

So, when knitting works complicate it becomes indispensable to block, that consists on fixing the shape of the knitted piece so it does wrinkle, the drawing looks good and it has the appropiate size. After finding out for long I decided that for every garment I had to use a different technique.

The first thing is to refer to washing instructions of the yarn balls that you have used because every fiber needs different cares. And then, it depends on the pattern and the technique you have used for kitting.

To block you need:
  • A padded surface where placing the garment and fixing it with pins.
  • Pins. There are the special ones for blocking: they have the head in the shape of T so they do not slip through the yarns.
  • A measuring tape and/or some rulers.
  • The rest of elements depend on the technique you use.

Hay fundamentalmente tres posibilidades:

Basically, there are three possibilities:

Wet blocking
  • Fill a sink or bucket with lukewarm water and dip the item approximately 15 to 30 minutes. You can add a mild detergent or conditioner.
  • Rinse in cold water. You can drain it a bit by pressing, but without twisting it.
  • Places it on a towel and roll both up to take the water out. Repeat as many times as necessary with other dry towels. Place the item on a padded surface giving the appropiate shape and size with the aid of pins and the measuring tape.
  • Leave to dry.
I have used this method for a lace shawl, which required to fix very well the drawing of the pattern.

Steam blocking

I have used this option with a shawl that only needed to block the edges, so they do not roll, and it has a composition mixture of wool and acrylic. I had to repeat the process twice.

Spray  blocking
  • Place the item on a padded surface and give it the appropiate shape and size with the aid of of pins and the measuring tape.
  • Spray it with cold or lukewarm water (according to the composition of the thread) using an atomizer.
  • If once the item is dry you have not obtained the wished result, repeat the process.

This has been my choice for a lace scarf that I knitted with 100% wool, and I used cold water. I was very worried about spoiingl the wool. I had to repeat the spraying twice.

  2. Gracias, María. Siempre me había preguntado cómo hacerlo.
    Saludos.
